what the future holds

so, now that we run and ride, we have to do all the parts we skipped.

ordered - points, plugs, condenser, plugwires, and boots

need - tank, seat, tail light

to do - real electrical system, mount reg rec, pick and mount tail light, better mount headlight, adjust carb floats, rebuild the cl200 petcock so it doesnt gass out the garage again, replace case bolts and carb bolts will stainless allen bolt hardware.

been away on business, but got the new parts and got some mounted.

new short levers, i couldnt get a cheap set all black so i went with the chrome and black to avoid all possibility of gold

AND

got the 7/8 left replacement grip in the mail, and its exactly want i wanted it to be... 7/8.

i had to ebay 5 of these to ensure that i got them when i was out of state, but i got them!

and they are just the look im shooting for

a fog light from 1961 with horizontal slats, kickass.

day 10 maiden voyage

we put the temp electrical system back on, did some troubleshooting with the spark ( the points were touching the cover and shorting out), also slapped a cl200 tank on and away we go.

got the first ride in. needs a touch of tuning, but sounds great and fast!... this bike is gonna be fun.

rigged up a dirtbike clutch lever (sans grip) and put the new black o-ring chain on

day 9

so, everyone knows its not as simple as it looks, but sometimes it all comes together.

we decided to put the new firestones on, which look great. i wanted the same profile in the front and back so i went with 18x3.5 because i was concerned with front fork clearance and i didnt want to swap the fork. i might have been able to push to 3.75 or 4.0 but i wanted a specific look on this bike, and so far its holding to my vision.

after the tires were on we couldnt help ourselves. just wanted to hear it.

rigged up a gas tank and ran the basics,

battery straight to the coils, and to a ground.

gas, air, no spark...

checked the plugs and the shoddy plug wires, but they were fine.

we pulled off the points cover, and holyshit

its becoming more and more evident that whoever had this bike last, was and idiot.

the points cover came off to reveal that only one of the 4 necessary screws remained. one of the points was simply wedged in the case, disconnected from the wires, and the other was flapping there sparking all over. what a mess. after some searching we found replacements, set the points. started right up. and T set the timing while we were at it.

it sounds GREAT.

one week from a random guys garage in dayton, to a running bike with a good engine.

Tbone got me a new set of carbs at CRC2, and at a good price. nice work

they didnt have everything, but filled in the spots i was missing on my carbs,

so the carb rebuild is complete, so i stuck some oval pods on and we are looking good.

also added the throttle cable and got a treat in the mail today!

it appears that im making some strange decisions with this bike, but itll all make sense when i do the second build up over the winter

i suppose that the bad days make you appreciate the good ones...

cleaned the carbs, starting installing new jets, needles, screws, o-rings... oh by the way, someone had this carb apart already and didnt put everything back in. oh, and why dont we screw up a few more pieces before we half put it back together. and bonus, the carb kits dont come with THOSE parts... great.

onto the grips.

grips came in, look great, but for some reason they thought they should send me a 7/8'' throttle and a 1'' left grip... i bet i somehow just dont get it. im sure its my fault.

ok lets try taking the sprocket cover off... of course i strip a bolt, why not?

well at least i can install the new chain, well i dont have a new sprocket yet, and for some reason the center stand hits the chain, so thats a bust too.

better luck next time.

the only treat in the mail yesterday was the new short shocks.

i thought black with chrome springs would be a classy touch on this all black frame. (if it stays that way)

dont worry, i ditched that crud rim already

swapped out for cleaner wheels (for now) still waiting on the tires

drum on the front, byebye pesky disc brakes

dropped the ass about 2", 2 minute swap and it looks way better

and got those damn reflectors off.
